The craftsmanshipThe Art Glass DifferenceWhy hand-cast art glass beats molded glass & resin, the many shapes our artisans create, and how to spot the real thing. โ–ฆ Material comparison โœฆ One craft, many shapes ๐Ÿ” Spot genuine glass Open
01 ยท Material Comparison

Hand-cast art glass vs. molded glass vs. resin

Three materials look similar in a thumbnail โ€” but live very differently on your wall. Here's how our hand-cast art glass compares.

Our Hand-Cast Art Glass Molded / Pressed Glass Resin / Acrylic Imitation
How it's made Hand-cast & shaped by artisans, one piece at a time Machine-pressed in a fixed mold, mass-produced Liquid resin poured into a mold, mass-produced
Texture & pattern Unique crackle texture โ€” no two tubes alike Identical, repeating pattern on every unit Flat, "printed-on" look; texture feels superficial
Light quality Deep, layered glow; light refracts through real glass Even but flat; little depth or movement Dull, slightly cloudy; can look plasticky when lit
Feel & weight Substantial, cool, solid in the hand Solid but uniform Noticeably light, warm, hollow-feeling
Color over time Color is in the glass โ€” won't fade or yellow Stable color Can yellow or cloud with heat & UV over time
Heat tolerance High โ€” glass handles bulb heat well High Lower โ€” can warp or discolor near heat
Character A one-of-a-kind work of glass art A functional, uniform fixture A budget look-alike

The takeaway: hand-cast art glass costs more to make, but it's the only one that gives you genuine depth of light, individual character, and lasting color โ€” the qualities that make a fixture feel like art rather than hardware.

02 ยท Forms & Shapes

One craft, many shapes

Every piece begins the same way โ€” molten glass, hand-cast and shaped by our artisans. From that single craft comes a whole family of forms, each catching and releasing light in its own way.

How to spot genuine art glass

Online photos can make resin and glass look alike. Here's how to tell the difference once it's in your home โ€” every point below describes our fixtures.

1
Pick it up

Real glass is cool and substantial. Resin feels warm, light, and hollow. Our tubes have real weight โ€” many customers say the heavy box was their first clue it's genuine.

2
Look at the texture

Hand-cast crackle texture has true depth you can feel with a fingertip. Resin texture looks like it's printed on a flat surface.

3
Turn on the light

Glass refracts light into a layered, moving glow. Resin tends to look flat, dull, or slightly cloudy when lit.

4
Compare two pieces

No two hand-cast tubes are exactly identical. If every piece looks machine-perfect and matched, it's molded โ€” not artisan glass.

Our promise: every fixture is genuine hand-cast art glass. Slight variation between pieces isn't a flaw โ€” it's proof it was made by hand.

A curtain of rippled glass, caught mid-fall and pinned to the wall.

The Lorelei Rippled Glass Curtain Wall Sconce gathers a row of vertical frosted glass panels beneath a slim plated canopy, each panel hung on its own small hook and ring so the whole piece drapes rather than sits. The surface of every panel carries a fine, wandering ripple โ€” closer to rain on a windowpane than to any repeating pattern. Unlit, it reads as pale relief sculpture. Lit, the ripples step forward, the glass warms to the color of candle wax, and the wall behind it fills with a soft upward-and-downward wash.

The hardware is deliberately plain against all that texture: a shallow round backplate, slim bent arms in polished nickel, and simple rings that let the panels hang with a little natural sway in their alignment. It's the kind of detail that keeps a modern art glass sconce from feeling machine-made.

  • 1

  • 2

  • Hallways & CorridorsSpace them every 8โ€“10 ft (2.4โ€“3 m) down the wall to build a rhythm rather than a runway. The shallow 5.9โ€ณ (15 cm) projection keeps the passage clear in halls as narrow as 36โ€ณ (90 cm).
  • Bedside & Reading WallSet the center about 30โ€“36โ€ณ (75โ€“90 cm) above the mattress top, or roughly 58โ€“62โ€ณ (147โ€“157 cm) from the floor. Frees the nightstand entirely while keeping the glow at reading height.
  • Entryway & Powder RoomSingle above a console or paired either side of a doorway. In a small powder room, one sconce at 64โ€“66โ€ณ (162โ€“168 cm) center height is usually enough to light the whole space softly.
Mounting Height Guide

The reliable rule for wall sconces is to place the center of the fixture at 60โ€“66โ€ณ (152โ€“168 cm) above the finished floor โ€” roughly eye level for a standing adult, which keeps the light source out of direct sightline. Lower it toward 58โ€“60โ€ณ for seated areas like a bedside or reading chair. If ceilings run above 9 ft (2.7 m), shift up a few inches so the fixture reads centered on the wall rather than low. Junction box position is set during installation, so decide the height before rough-in.

What Makes It Special

01

Ripple Formed Into the Glass

Run a hand across the face and you feel it โ€” the ripple is worked into the glass surface itself, a fine wandering grain closer to rain on a window or weathered driftwood than to any repeating motif. Because the texture is formed rather than applied, each panel holds light in its own slightly different way, and the row never looks stamped from a single mold.

ย

02

Textured Glass's Soft Diffused Glow

Clear glass simply lets light through and leaves a hotspot behind. Here the frosted, rippled face breaks the beam apart before it ever reaches the room โ€” the panels warm to the color of candle wax, the ripples surface as faint vertical veining, and the wall receives an even wash above and below. The bulb stays hidden from every viewing angle.

03

Suspended Ring by Ring

Look at the top edge and the construction gives itself away: a shallow round canopy, slim bent arms, and a small polished ring holding each glass panel independently. Nothing is glued into a frame. That single decision is what lets the row hang like fabric โ€” with a little honest irregularity in the line โ€” instead of standing rigid like a box.

The Design

A Curtain of Light and Glass

It doesn't fill the room. It changes the wall it lives on.

Look at a rain-streaked window at dusk. The glass is still glass โ€” flat, ordinary, easy to walk past โ€” and yet the water running down it has turned the whole pane into something that moves. That is the effect this sconce was built around.

The design started with a refusal: no dome, no shade, no single sealed shape. Instead, a row of narrow glass panels, each one hung from its own small ring along a shallow canopy โ€” so the piece drapes down the wall rather than sits on it. Every panel carries a fine wandering ripple worked into the surface of the glass, not printed onto it. Hold two side by side and they read as the same family but never as the same panel. The texture is the material, which is why the row never looks stamped.

Switched off, it is almost architectural โ€” a pale relief panel, quiet enough to disappear into a white wall in daylight. Switched on, everything reverses. The frosted face breaks the light apart before it reaches you, the ripples surface as faint vertical veining, and the glass warms to the color of candle wax. Light spills up toward the ceiling and down toward the floor, and the wall itself becomes the lamp. You never see the bulb โ€” only what it does.

Mornings at the Mirror

A pair either side, glowing at face height. Light arrives from both sides instead of straight down โ€” no shadow under the eyes, no guessing at your own reflection.

The Walk Down the Hall

Repeated along a corridor, it turns a passage into a rhythm โ€” pools of warm light you move through at night without ever reaching for the overhead switch.

The Last Hour Before Sleep

Above the nightstand, dimmed low. Enough glow to finish a chapter, soft enough that closing the book and reaching up is the only thing left to do.

Formed in glass, softened by light โ€” and finished by the wall you give it.

Questions, Answered

Before You Order

Everything you might want to know about the glass, the light, and getting it on your wall.

01What kind of glass is this, and how is the ripple made?
Each panel is textured art glass with a frosted face. The ripple is formed into the surface of the glass itself โ€” not printed, etched on as a film, or applied as a coating โ€” which is why you can feel it under your fingers and why it holds light in depth rather than on the surface. Because the texture forms in the material, the pattern wanders slightly from panel to panel. That variation is inherent to the process, not a flaw.
02Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Very close โ€” but the panels are never identical to one another, and that is intentional. The silhouette, size, finish, and overall color family will match what you see here; the exact path of the ripple in each panel will differ slightly. Panels also hang with a little natural give in their alignment, since each one suspends from its own ring rather than being fixed into a frame.
03How bright is it? Will I see the bulb?
It gives a soft, diffused wash rather than a directed beam. The frosted rippled face breaks the light apart before it leaves the fixture, so there is no hotspot and the bulb stays hidden from every normal viewing angle. Light spills upward toward the ceiling and downward along the wall. It's excellent ambient and face-height light โ€” for a work surface or reading desk, pair it with dedicated task lighting.
04What bulb does it take, and can it be dimmed?
It takes one candelabra-base bulb (E12 / E14), LED or incandescent. Dimming depends on the bulb: fit a dimmable bulb on a compatible dimmer switch and it will dim smoothly. Bulbs supplied as standard are not dimmable, so order dimmable bulbs separately if you want that control. A warm color temperature of 2700K suits the glass best โ€” it brings out the candle-wax warmth in the panels.
05Should I buy one or a pair? How far apart?
For a bathroom mirror, buy a pair โ€” light from both sides is what removes shadow from the face, and a single sconce beside a mirror lights unevenly. Space them 36โ€“40โ€ณ (90โ€“100 cm) apart, or roughly 3โ€“4โ€ณ out from each edge of the mirror. A single sconce works well above a console, beside a doorway, at a bedside, or in a small powder room. Down a hallway, plan on one every 8โ€“10 ft (2.4โ€“3 m).
06How high should I mount it?
Set the center of the fixture 60โ€“66โ€ณ (152โ€“168 cm) above the finished floor โ€” around eye level for a standing adult, which keeps the light source out of direct sightline. For a vanity, 64โ€“66โ€ณ puts the glow at face height. For a bedside or reading chair, drop to 58โ€“60โ€ณ, or about 30โ€“36โ€ณ (75โ€“90 cm) above the mattress top. With ceilings over 9 ft (2.7 m), shift up a few inches so it reads centered on the wall. Decide the height before the junction box is roughed in.
07Can I use it in a bathroom?
Yes โ€” beside a vanity mirror is one of the best places for it. Mount it in a dry or damp location, away from direct water spray: alongside a mirror, above a console, or on a general bathroom wall is fine. Do not install it inside a shower enclosure or directly over a tub, which require a fixture rated for wet locations. Good ventilation and a licensed electrician handling the connection are the two things that matter most.
08Is it hardwired, or does it plug in?
It is hardwired and mounts to a standard wall junction box โ€” there is no cord or plug, so nothing is visible on the wall. We recommend installation by a licensed electrician. All mounting hardware is included; the backplate goes up first, then each glass panel hangs on its ring. Always cut power at the breaker before starting. If you don't have a box in the right place, an electrician can add one โ€” worth planning before you order.
09Will the glass arrive safely?
Yes. Every panel is individually wrapped and seated in thick protective foam inside a reinforced box, with the metal canopy and hardware packed separately. We ship glass every day and pack for the journey. In the rare case something arrives damaged, send us photos within 24 hours of delivery and we'll make it right.
10How do I clean it?
Dust each panel with a soft dry cloth, or a barely damp one for fingerprints. Wipe with the direction of the ripple rather than across it. Avoid abrasive pads, solvents, and harsh chemicals on the textured face โ€” the grain will trap residue. Switch the fixture off and let the bulb cool completely first. Twice a year is plenty in a bedroom or hall; a bathroom may want it a little more often.
